What Happens When the Lights Go Out?

I've always been fascinated by duality, looking at something from another point of view and discovering what was there all along, just waiting to be seen.

Lately, I've been experimenting with fluorescent paint and black light, and it feels a little like magic.

I paint with the lights on. Then I turn them off. Back and forth. Light. Dark. Light again. It's a constant push and pull between what I can see and what only reveals itself in the darkness.

Sometimes the painting surprises even me.

There's something deeper in that idea that I love, too. Scripture reminds us that what is hidden will eventually be brought into the light.

Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to these paintings.

Change the light, and suddenly you see what was there all along.
